Breast augmentation, a procedure in which implants are placed to increase the size of the breasts, is a very popular cosmetic surgery. Women opt for the surgery for many reasons, and the treatment is especially effective for those who would like to achieve a more desirable breast shape and size following pregnancy and breastfeeding, or for those who have never really been satisfied with the size of their breasts. It is important to understand, however, that the procedure is major surgery and requires adequate recovery time.
Read on to find out what to expect from the healing process, and what you can do to ensure a smooth recovery…
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, which means that you won’t feel anything during the procedure itself. Once the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off, however, you are likely to feel some pain at the site of surgery. Your surgeon will wrap your breasts with a compression garment, which will support the healing process and minimise swelling, as well as the build-up of fluid.
Your surgeon will prescribe medication to help manage any pain that you feel. The first few days of recovery are generally the most uncomfortable, but the worst of the pain should subside within a week or so.
It is completely normal to experience some pain and swelling for a few weeks after breast augmentation surgery. These side effects will, however, resolve with time. Within around two months, you should make a full recovery, although this does vary from patient to patient.
If you have an office-based job, it is advisable that you take at least one week off work. Your surgeon may recommend that you take up to four weeks off if your job is physically demanding. Driving and light exercise can usually be resumed within a week, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for up to six weeks following surgery.
Although each individual is different, there are a few things you can do to enjoy a successful recovery. Always follow your surgeon’s instructions when it comes to wearing your compression garment, as well as caring for your incisions. Take any medications that have been prescribed as these will help to manage your pain, and in the case of antibiotics, keep infections at bay.
You may find it helpful to prepare your home for your recovery before you go for surgery. Set up a comfortable place to rest, and stock your fridge with nutritious foods. A balanced diet and plenty of water will aid the healing process.
If possible, have someone help you with day-to-day housework, at least for the first few days of your recovery.
While you are recovering from surgery, be sure to wear loose-fitting clothes in which you feel comfortable. Take plenty of time to rest, and avoid strenuous activities for as long as your surgeon recommends.
Discuss ways to manage your surgical scars with your surgeon — with the right care, scars will fade over time.
